Bernadoodles: A Primer

Posted on: 17 May 2023

When it's time to get a new pet, some people look for a purebred puppy from a dog breeder. Purebred puppies are not your only option, however. One interesting choice is to select a hybrid dog, such as a Bernedoodle, from a reputable breeder. The following article answers some key questions a typical dog lover would have about this topic.

What Is a Bernedoodle?

Bernedoodles are not purebreds or mutts (dogs of uncertain parentage). They fall into a category known as designer dogs. These are dogs that are originally bred from two purebred parents to create hybrid dogs with desirable characteristics. Naturally, a designer dog can also be the result of two matching hybrids breeding. For example, a Bernedoodle can be the result of two appropriate types of purebred dogs breeding or the offspring of two Bernedoodle parents. Bernedoodles that are the offspring of two purebreds are more common, however, according to the Purina website.

About

The Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog that comes from breeding two purebreds: the Bernese Mountain dog and a Poodle. The purpose of breeding the two purebreds is to create a dog that possesses the attractive characteristics of each breed, while keeping unattractive traits, such as shedding and drooling, to a minimum.

Bernedoodles come in a wide range of colors. They can be a combination of black, tan, and white, like the typical Bernese Mountian dog, solid black, white and black, or a mixture of these colors. The coat can be either curly or straight and is usually quite thick. The weight can vary from as little as 20 pounds (for toy breeds) to as heavy as 90 pounds.

Bernedoodles are bred to be companion dogs and have friendly and easy-going personalities in most cases. One key point to remember is that this type of dog wants a lot of attention from its human family, so make sure that you are able to spend time with the dog and give them the affection they crave.

Breeder

When it's time to acquire your Bernedoodle, make certain that you choose a reputable Bernedoodle breeder who has a reputation for breeding healthy dogs under sanitary and wholesome conditions. If you know any Bernedoodle owners, ask them where they acquired their dog. You want to choose a Bernedoodle breeder who keeps their dogs happy and who pays close attention to the health of each dog.

Visit the breeder's kennel site before any purchase. Reputable Bernedoodle breeders will not mind having you take a look around their property. Make certain that the breeder gives you references from those who have obtained Bernedoodles from them and contact those people for confirmation.
